Eating well on any budget

Updated: Aug 28

Now, more than ever, some of us need to be a little more conscious when hitting the grocery store! I've put together some awesome tips on how to eat well on a budget...

Plan, Plan, Plan!

#Plan Your Weekly Meals

Before making your #shopping list, write down meals you want to make for the week. For example; Monday - Chicken and Veg stir-fry, Tuesday - Burgers and Homemade fries etc....That way, when you head out shopping, you won't have the urge to overspend, even with all the crazy 'sale' options may be tempting...

Here are some basic tips for creating your #menu and #grocerylist:

  1. See what you already have. Look in your freezer, cabinets, and refrigerator. Make a note of what you currently have on hand. You can save money by using these items in the upcoming week’s meals.

  2. Create a list of recipes to try. Find new ideas for healthy and low-cost meals based on what you have on hand, foods your family enjoys, and foods that are good buys.

  3. Think about your schedule. Choose meals you can easily prepare when you don’t have a lot of time. Save recipes that take longer for days off. You also can prepare meals in advance to heat and serve on your busiest days.

  4. Plan to use leftovers. Think about larger recipes with enough servings for multiple meals. This can reduce the number of ingredients you need to buy, and save you time preparing another meal.

Choose some frozen vegetables

Fresh vegetables can be expensive, and some #frozen #vegetables can taste just as great. Not only are they cheaper, but frozen veggies contain comparable vitamins and minerals when compared to fresh veggies. I love frozen Green beans and Parsnips. They both taste just as good when cooked. Be sure to choose vegetables with no added sugars or salts. (Seasonings)

Create Tasty - Low cost recipes that can be frozen

Creating Family favorite recipes is a regular thing in my home. A good spaghetti sauce, some #Kofte or a Turkish recipe with Lentils for example can be made in bulk and frozen. For inspiration, refer to these fun family favorites (also printable).

Shop seasonal

Have a think about what is in season and buy #fresh #fruit and #vegetables according to this. In Dubai for example our local tomatoes are not great during the summer months because its just too hot for them to grow but they are amazing for 8 months of the year! I use the local Kale, cucumbers, sweetcorn and tomatoes most of the year. In the summer in Europe for example, you can find watermelon, berries and corn for a fraction of the cost of apples and kale.

A few of my favorites for the week - This cost around $45 from my local vegetable market in Dubai, UAE

Buy beans and Pulses

Beans and pulses are one of the best #healthy foods to eat for cheap. I recommend going for the raw/dried options as they are so #cheap and offer more in the way of #nutrition as the canned options often contain added salts and other #preservatives. #Blackbeans are super nutritious and filling. 100 grams contains 16g Dietary #fiber and 21g #Protein. The iron, calcium, copper, and zinc all contribute to building and maintaining bone structure and strength.

Store your food correctly

Most fruit and vegetables should be stored in the fridge. Especially in hot climates. Be sure to follow the “wash as you eat” rule and store fruits in bags/containers with holes to allow for moisture to escape and #store vegetables in air tight containers. Vegetables should be stored in a different part of the fridge than fruit. This will prevent them from ripening too fast. I love these Rectangular Storage Containers available at Amazon.ae

Get the best offers!

I make a list of which #supermarkets usually have the best deals on certain days and make sure I out this somewhere visible - At the moment its on my fridge! Choosing those times / days to buy your groceries at certain stores can really make a difference to your overall spend. Speaking of which, I'm just about to head over to the Organics foods and Cafe to take advantage of their 1st Sunday of the month discount offers!
